Meet Duchess – The Queen of Kajasun Sanctuary
At Kajasun Sanctuary, every animal has a story — and Duchess, our wise and wonderful mare, carries hers with royal grace.

Duchess is the oldest horse at the sanctuary, but age hasn't slowed her spirit one bit. Around here, she’s known as “the Queen of the Yard” — and rightfully so. If you hear a commanding squeal across the paddocks, it’s likely Duchess reminding everyone who’s boss, gently but firmly guiding the herd as only she can.
During the day, Duchess likes to spend her time standing in the stable next to the feed room — conveniently located where the sheep sleep at night. It’s her favorite lookout spot, and let’s be honest, a clever place to wait for treats.
Whenever the other horses are brought in after their work sessions for a reward, Duchess never misses her chance. With her nose over the stable door and a knowing look in her eye, she silently asks, “What about me?” And more often than not, she gets her treat — sometimes even stealing an apple (or a whole lunch!) if the opportunity presents itself. It’s all part of her charm.
Duchess goes out for peaceful walks two to three times a week. These outings are her favorite part of the week — she’s sweet, gentle, and always eager to explore. After a good walk, she returns to her paddock glowing with pride and joy, a picture of grace and contentment.
Duchess is more than just a resident here — she’s a symbol of the love and care we offer at Kajasun. She reminds us of the dignity of aging, the beauty of gentle leadership, and the happiness found in life’s simple moments.
