Life at the
Sanctuary

When Dusty first arrived, he was cautious and unsure. I remember taking him to the arena to begin some gentle training. The moment I picked up the carrot stick — a harmless training aid — his eyes went wide with fear, like saucers. It was clear he had been through more than we could know. So, we didn’t use the stick at all in the beginning. We simply met Dusty where he was.

 

When I asked him to move in a circle, he would only go about a metre or two around me before quickly returning to my side, needing the reassurance of a gentle stroke. That simple touch calmed him, grounded him — it was where he felt safe.

 

Over time, and with patient, consistent love, Dusty began to grow. Today, he moves confidently in 20-metre circles in both directions. I can now use the carrot stick as part of his training, and he understands it’s a guide, not a threat. His movement is relaxed and connected — and it’s a joy to watch him work.

 

The best part? Even after all that progress, Dusty still chooses to come back to stand right by my shoulder when we’re done. That’s his safe place. That’s where he knows he’s loved.

 

And like many of our animals here at Kajasun, Dusty has learned that following me to the feed room might mean a well-deserved treat. With his nose gently brushing my arm the whole way, he stays close — a silent companion, growing more confident every day.

 

Dusty reminds us that healing takes time, and that trust, once earned, is one of the most beautiful gifts of all.
